Smitten in Church
Sweet girl, the verdict of mine-eyes
Has forced me to discover
What I no longer can disguise,
I 'm thy devoted lover;
Perchance the world may call it rude
Thus to address a stranger
I know ' tis wrong thus to intrude,
But I forgo the danger
I never can forget the nook
That was strange to me before,
Beneath the altar and the book
So close to the pulpit door;
And we were placed, as if by chance
Some pre determination
Had pre-ordained a single glance
Should settle my probation!
In mythological love,
'tis said,
The Fates, by stern decree
Spin out at will life's brittle thread
And weave up one destiny;
But I so gladly pass thus by
And seek out real truth
As now I see it in thine eye
‘Mid jewels of thy youth.
For language of the eyes disclose
Secrets of the deepest heart.
Surer than poetry or pose
With their marshaled magic art;
Give me some token, then to tell
Or smile, that may discover
The thoughts that in thy bosom dwell;
Or, if thou lovest another!
