Obsequies At Marshall and Jefferson, Texas. 1870

“Obsequies At Marshall.— We heard with mingled feelings of gratification and pride of the respect paid in Marshall to the memory of Gen. Robert E. Lee.  All business was suspended throughout the day, the houses on the Public Square were draped in mourning. And for three hours the bells tolled in morning union with the feelings of the people.  A large meeting convened at the Court-house, grace by the presence of accomplished ladies, and eulogies upon the illustrious deceased were delivered by Col. A. Pope, Major Stedman, Col. Burke, and Rev. A.E. Clemmons.”

The meeting held at Freeman’s Hall in this city, on Saturday evening in honor of the memory of Gen. Robert E. Lee, was worthy of Jefferson as the metropolis of Eastern Texas, and of the patriotism of our people.  The Hall was swept and garnished. and draped in mourning.   This was the work of the ladies and of Major Pernett, who took an active interest in the matter.  It was creditable to them and to him.  Portraits of Gen. Lee were to be seen from every portion of the house.  The scene was imposing, impressive and solemn, and the eulogies delivered worthy of the occasion.  We have not time to do justice to the occasion, but trust before our weekly issue to endeavor to do so.
